What is Fatigue?

We all experience tiredness at times, which is usually relieved by sleep and rest.

Fatigue, however, is when the tiredness is often overwhelming and isn’t relieved by sleep or rest.

A serious illness, such as coronavirus, cancer or stroke, or recovering from medical treatments can make you tired, but other illnesses can also leave you feeling washed out.  Tiredness or exhaustion that goes on for a long time is not usual and can affect your ability to get on and enjoy your life.

Symptoms of Fatigue

  • Chronic tiredness or sleepiness
  • Fatigue, exhaustion lasting more than 24 hours
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Sore or aching muscles and joints
  • Muscle weakness
  • Impaired decision-making and judgement
  • Moodiness, such as irritability, frustration
  • Appetite loss, nausea
  • Irritable bowel type symptoms
  • Sensitivity to noise, light, chemicals, smells
  • Poor short-term memory
  • Poor concentration
  • Reduced ability to pay attention to the situation at hand
  • Low motivation
  • Unrefreshing sleep
  • Daytime napping
  • Vivid dreams
  • Stress, anxiety, low mood
